June 5, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>At least three persons were arrested in politically-motivated <\/a>cases in Belarus on June 4. Andrej Mika\u0142aje\u016d was apprehended for following opposition content and posting critical comments; and Maciej Aviar\u010duk and his brother, for participating in a 2020 postelection protest rally in Brest, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alena Chanina, Nina Marcirosava, Veranika \u0141uka\u0161ova and Vital Ta\u0142o\u010dka were tried in the Hrodna region for sharing opposition content, the Pravo Imeyut<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, sentenced eight locals to prison terms on protest-related charges, the Brest branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. D\u017amitryj Filipovi\u010d was given two and a half years; Alaksandar \u0141a\u016dru\u0161\u010dyk, Kanstancin Kalaha and Eryk Ka\u0142aso\u016dski, two years; Ivan Packo, Ivan Dryk, Pavie\u0142 Sierhijenia and Arciom \u0141api\u010d, 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 30, a judge in Dziat\u0142ava, Hrodna region, sentenced D\u017amitryj Danil\u010dyk to two years in prison on charges of insulting the head of state and officials in connection with critical social media posts, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u017dana Da\u0161kievi\u010d went on trial in Minsk on Monday, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. Authorities accuse her of association with an extremist group and recruiting Belarusian nationals to participate in armed conflicts. No further details are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siarhiej Hnia\u016dko, accused of insulting Alaksandar \u0141ukasenka, went on trial in Or\u0161a, Viciebsk region, on June 4, Viasna said. The man had already been convicted in a similar case a month ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist” list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities branded the Telegram channels of the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House, Narodnyj Reporter’s project and basketball player Kaciaryna Snycina’s Instagram page as extremist, the information ministry said. Other blacklisted content includes krama. kalinouskaha<\/em> on Instagram, poet Andrej Chadanovi\u010d\u2019s Facebook and YouTube accounts, blogger Alaksandar Piatruchin’s Facebook page and reform.news<\/em> on Odnoklassniki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 4, a judge in Viciebsk was scheduled to review the sentences against jailed cameraman Via\u010dasla\u016d \u0141azara\u016d and his ex-wife Ta\u0107ciana Py\u0107ko, the Belarusian Association of Journalists said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Py\u0107ko was convicted in connection with his work for Belsat <\/em>TV, a Warsaw-based television station deemed extremist in Belarus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2023, the Supreme Court replaced her three-year prison term with a suspended three-year sentence and reduced \u0141azara\u016d\u2019s five-and-a-half-year prison term by six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 5, <\/a>human rights defenders identified at least 1,394 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
