June 7, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 256 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day after thwarting 181 attempts on Wednesday, Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland remained the primary target for third-country migrants who attempted 400 illegal border crossings on June 5 and 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few weeks, Polish border guards reported several physical attacks by aggressive migrants. A Polish soldier who was patrolling the border died on June 6 after being stabbed on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 20,180 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 17,720 attempts via Poland alone, 24 percent more than in the same period last year. Latvia thwarted 2, 234 attempts; Lithuania, 226.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings picked up pace in February, reaching record highs in May, Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
