June 10, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Supreme Court will hear trade unionist Volha Brycikava’s appeal on Tuesday behind closed doors, the electronic court schedule says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judge U\u0142adzimir \u010carva\u010d will preside over the proceedings scheduled to open at 9:30 am. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brycikava, the leader of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union\u2019s cell at the Naftan oil refinery in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, has been in detention since August 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was convicted of inciting hatred in connection with politically-sensitive social media posts. The sentence is unknown. The trial was reportedly held in early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 2020 and 2022, Brycikava served several jail terms and spent a total of 105 days in jail on politically-motivated charges in 2022 alone, while authorities outlawed all independent trade unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist was fired from Naftan, where she had worked for 16 years, for her political views. After the disputed 2020 presidential election, she was one of the protest movement leaders at Naftan, voicing the workers\u2019 demands to the authorities and the company’s management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
