June 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union has not allowed at least 1,840 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus in early June, 78 percent more than in the same period last year but 18.6 percent fewer than in early May, Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tension at the Belarusian-Polish border decreased by 21 percent month on month, with 1,692 attempts by third-country foreigners reported from June 1 to 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, illegal crossings into Lithuania and Latvia rose to 14 and 134 attempts in the first 10 days of June, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU has thwarted at least 20,653 illegal border crossings at its shared border with Belarus, 25 percent more than in the same period last year. Of these, Poland reported 18,150 attempts; Latvia 2,272; Lithuania, 231.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings have been growing since February, reaching record highs in May, Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats showed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few weeks, Polish border guards reported several physical attacks by aggressive migrants. Polish serviceman Mateusz Sitek died on June 6 after being stabbed on duty while patrolling the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
