June 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> At least 31 women and 114 men were convicted of crimes in politically-motivated cases in May, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most sentences, 76, were imposed in Minsk, followed by 34 sentences in the Brest region, 12 sentences in Hrodna and 11 in Homiel. Eight cases were documented in Minsk, two in Viciebsk and another two in Mahilo\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victims included “at least six families.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“May was marked by the beginning of the most massive in absentia trial against ‘\u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s think tankers’ and Franak Via\u010dorka, advisor to the opposition leader,” Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights center noted the “extremely negative trend” toward sentencing prisoners for malicious disobedience to prison administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The center also pointed out the more frequent use of “crimes against the state” to prosecute dissidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It reported an increase in court hearings on calls for sanctions against the government. The charge “should be considered solely as a repressive tool to suppress any alternative point of view and, accordingly, to persecute political opponents,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 5,133 people have been convicted in politically-motivated criminal cases in Belarus in four years, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2020, 4,100 people have been included in the “list of extremists.” The Committee for State Security (KGB) has added more than 400 names to the “list of terrorists.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
