June 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Yerevan is treating Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka the way it would like to, but cannot treat Russia, political analyst Alexander Friedman told Pozirk<\/em>, commenting on Armenia’s decision to recall its ambassador from Belarus over Minsk’s support for Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“\u0141uka\u0161enka is being hit instead of Russia because it is safe for Armenia. With Russia, Armenia does not behave this way, although Belarus’ support for Azerbaijan is incomparable to Russia’s. \u0141uka\u0161enka plays a supporting role. At the same time, because of his psychological type, he must be offended and react,” Friedman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he and other Armenian officials will not travel to Belarus as long as \u0141uka\u0161enka is in power. Yerevan recalled its Ambassador Razmik Khumaryan from Minsk for consultations. A few hours later, Belarus reciprocated by recalling Ambassador Alaksandar Kaniuk from Armenia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka may be particularly upset by Pashinyan’s suggestion that his rule is not indefinite, Friedman said. “If he does not react directly, we can expect an anti-Armenian campaign in the Belarusian propaganda media.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friedman went on to say that Armenia is responding to Belarus’ clear support for Azerbaijan now, although “the conflict has been brewing for a long time.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the Armenian premier is making emotional but measured statements because he realizes that the West will appreciate his attacks on \u0141uka\u0161enka. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The conflict is unfolding in the West\u2013Russia dimension. Pashinyan’s actions show his orientation,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on Pashinyan’s pledge not to visit Belarus, the analyst noted that Armenian officials were not particularly willing to visit Minsk anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“\u0141uka\u0161enka understands that he can benefit more from active support for Azerbaijan than from loyalty to Armenia. Relations will gradually freeze, but in my opinion they will not break completely, unless \u0141uka\u0161enka additionally provokes the Armenians. If the leaders behave with restraint, the situation will not become explosive,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
