June 14, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Belarusian foreign exchange market has not been affected by the United States sanctions against the Moscow Exchange, which halted US dollar and euro trade on June 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the latest major financial punishment over Moscow’s full-scale military offensive against Ukraine, the United States announced Wednesday it was sanctioning Moscow Exchange, the country’s main stock market and foreign currency clearing house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move cuts the group off from Western financial architecture and forced it to suspend trading in both the dollar and euro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian currency rose by 0.01 percent to 3.5402 per 100 Russian rubles at cash exchange offices yesterday, with the gap between the average buying and selling rates widening slightly, as the buying rate fell 0.18 percent and the selling rate rose by 0.16 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several banks reported more significant exchange rate fluctuations, reacting to panic expectations in Russia, Russia’s central bank’s steps to strengthen the ruble or attributing multidirectional dynamics to Russian currency rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 13, the Belarusian currency depreciated to 3.2192 against the US dollar at cash exchange offices, losing 0.58 percent, with the average dollar buying rate up 0.61 percent and selling rate up 0.56 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rubel also fell to 3.484 against the euro at cash exchange offices, depreciating 0.57 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian traders are unlikely to move to the Belarusian Currency and Stock Exchange (BCSE) amid the sanctions, economic expert Jaras\u0142a\u016d Raman\u010duk has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanctions would have alarmed traders and could be effective only if Belarus and Russia used market instruments, which is not the case, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk and Moscow operate behind the iron curtain of financial transactions, controlling even purchase and sale orders, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should there be large flows of Russian capital through the BCSE, the US would target Belarus as an intermediary, Raman\u010duk stressed, noting that Russia may use “other platforms and mechanisms” available in China, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanctions against the Moscow Exchange are only a “temporary inconvenience,” as “the restrictions do not concern currency, finance, incoming and outgoing flows,” he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
