June 14, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 118 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day after thwarting 175 attempts on June 12, Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday and Thursday, Poland thwarted 250 attempts and Latvia, 43. Lithuania has not recorded illegal border crossings for two consecutive days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard reported continuing attacks with stones and tree branches, noting that three persons were arrested for complicity in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From June 1 to 13, illegal border crossings have fallen 24.6 percent compared to the same period in May but soared 77 percent year on year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 21,299 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, 26 percent more than in the same period last year. Poland reported 18,710 attempts; Latvia 2,355; Lithuania, 234.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings have been growing since February, reaching record highs in May, Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats showed. Over the past few weeks, Polish border guards have been reporting physical attacks by aggressive migrants. Polish serviceman Mateusz Sitek who was patrolling the border died on June 6 after being stabbed on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
