June 15, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Politically-motivated crackdown <\/a>in Belarus continued on June 14 with new additions to the authorities\u2019 extremist registers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added 20 new names to its\u00a0list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activities,\u201d taking the total of entries to 4,154. Exiled politician Ivan Kra\u016dco\u016d is wanted in Belarus, three others are serving prison terms and 16 have criminal records and may be serving non-custodial sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities branded Media IQ<\/em> project’s social media pages, 10 videos by FreshMeatOMG blogger and several historical books by Russian writer Viktor Suvorov as extremist content. Other additions to the information ministry’s list also feature Mediki.Grodno<\/em> and Rospartizan<\/em> Telegram channels and chats; \u010caradziej<\/em>, Kaniu\u0161e\u016dski<\/em>, zmahar_<\/em> and Belarus<\/em> on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests and trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pro-government source reported an arrest of a man accused of signing up for the opposition Pieramoha plan and posting comments about prosecutors, law enforcers and police officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Minsk sentenced senior Halina \u0141ahackaja to two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement on protest-related charges, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. She has been in custody since early April when she came to the police department to retrieve her phone confiscated two years ago. Rights groups consider her a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court heard Andrej \u0160maj’s appeal on Friday, it said. The man, originally from Ukraine, resided in Viciebsk and was found guilty of espionage. Authorities did not disclose the verdict and the result of the appeal hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights groups declared Ta\u0107ciana Li\u0144nik, Siarhiej Bielski, D\u017amitryj Davyda\u016d, Fiodar Matoryn, Vasil Kavalo\u016d, D\u017amitryj Danil\u010dyk, Siarhiej Hnia\u016dko, U\u0142adzimir Karotki, Andrej Burdzienia and Mika\u0142aj Chi\u0142a as political prisoners. Most of them were convicted for insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and officials in connection with critical social media posts, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 15, human rights defenders identified at least 1,406 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
