June 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights groups have labeled five more people as political prisoners, according to a joint statement released<\/a> by the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new designations are Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Niehadzienka, sentenced to prison for association with an opposition group branded extremist by authorities. Jazep Duleba was arrested on a similar extremism charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights defenders also listed Anatol Va\u0142ad\u017ako, arrested for alleged extremism and terrorism funding for donations to opposition groups; Alaksandar Ijoda, sentenced to prison for on charges of violent disorder and extremism funding; and Aksana Lapko, arrested on suspicion of extremism funding in connection with donations to opposition groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights organizations were unable to find out the exact sentences. Activists demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners and an end to reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Viasna, the statement was signed by Pravavaja Inicyjatyva, Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House, Belarusian PEN, Belarusian Helsinki Committee and Lawtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 1,409 people are currently serving politically-motivated sentences in Belarus, according to rights activists. Tens of thousands have suffered various forms of reprisals since the disputed presidential election of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
