June 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The organizers in Israel have canceled a conference marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazis because of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s recent antisemitic remark, a reliable source has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chaim Herzog Museum of the Jewish Soldier planned to hold the conference on June 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was to include a wreath-laying ceremony for Jewish partisans and ghetto fighters, a dinner and a World War II exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An association of Jewish refugees and Holocaust survivors and the All-Israeli Association of Immigrants from Belarus were organizing the conference with support from the Belarusian embassy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka made the controversial remark on June 14, while discussing a corruption probe involving dozens of officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI beg your pardon, I\u2019m not antisemitic, but more than half of them are Jews,\u201d he said. \u201cDo they have a privileged position in our country, that they steal and do not think about their future?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz described the statement as \u201cunacceptable and outrageous,\u201d\u00a0jns.org<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/a> Such statements \u201csound like clear antisemitic comments,\u201d Katz noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, \u0141uka\u0161enka demonstrated his antisemitic views on several occasions. Back in 2007, he blamed Jews for turning Babrujsk, a Belarusian city with rich Jewish history, into a \u201cpigsty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2015, he said he wanted to keep the Jewish population \u201cunder control\u201d and reign in Jews such as the late founder of tut.by<\/em> Juryj Zisier.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
