June 20, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> More than 500 extremism-related minor offenses and 300 criminal offenses were detected in the Homiel region in the first five months of 2024, a regional police official said at a forum at Francysk Skaryna Homiel State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gomelskaya Pravda<\/em> quoted Andrej Majsiejka\u016d as saying that police monitor the social media and users\u2019 online activities to safeguard minors from extremism, the term officials in Belarus use to describe any dissent, not only content promoting violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, regional ideology officer Dzianis Jazierski said that teenagers fall victim to enemies’ “subversive work” through a lack of “digital hygiene.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juryj Bu\u0142ynka, a deputy prosecutor of the Homiel region, complained about uncontrolled flows of information on the Internet. Some of it is malicious and distorts reality, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homiel region prosecutors have asked judges to label more than 90 information products as extremist content since the beginning of 2023, the regional office reported in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said that people charged with minor offenses for sharing banned content were officially warned against breaking anti-extremism laws again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forum took place at what officials call dialogue platform – regular meetings held by officials with members of the public to discuss sociopolitical issues and government policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, Minsk prosecutors reported that their monitoring of web sites, social media and messenger applications in 2023 and early 2024 resulted in more than 180 requests for extremist content designations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judges granted more than 160 of these requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian authorities have imprisoned and persecuted critics under the pretext of fighting extremism and terrorism after the 2020 mass protests against election fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
