June 21, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The number of illegal border crossings between Belarus and Poland has plunged 30 percent since June 13, when Warsaw enacted a 90-day border area entry ban, the Polish interior ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish border guards registered about 750 attempts to cross the border illegally in the first week of the ban after thwarting more than 1,100 attempts in the preceding week. However, attacks on Polish border guards rose from five to 11 over the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry said it issued 33 permits for staying in the areas affected by the ban, including 28 for journalists and five for international NGOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed to ensure public safety and protect police officers, border guards and military personnel, the ban was introduced in response to attacks at the border, one of which resulted in the death of Polish serviceman Mateusz Sitek, stabbed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegal border crossings picked up pace this February, reaching record highs in May,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
