June 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has appointed experts to investigate human rights abuses in Belarus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It includes Susan Bazilli (Canada), director of the International Women\u2019s Rights Project, Monika Stanis\u0142awa P\u0142atek (Poland), criminology department head at the Faculty of Law of the University of Warsaw, and human rights lawyer Karinna Moskalenko (Russia). The latter will chair the group, said<\/a> UNHRC President Omar Zniber (Morocco).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNHRC decided to form the group at its session in Geneva on April 4. Its mandate is to establish the facts, circumstances and root causes of all alleged human rights violations committed in Belarus since May 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will collect and analyze evidence, identify those responsible and make recommendations to “put an end to impunity.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The individuals appointed to the group previously served as experts for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, examining the situation in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s chief aide Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em> that the experts are highly qualified and “have experience with Belarus.” He is confident that their work will be “important and visible.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the group “will help document the crimes of the regime and collect evidence in order to ultimately bring all those responsible to justice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The fact that there are two UN mandates for Belarus – a special rapporteur and an expert group – indicates that the United Nations attaches great importance to dealing with Belarus. This is the result of the work of Belarusian human rights activists and democratic forces, among others,” Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Special rapporteur Ana\u00efs Marin (France) will present her new report on the human rights situation in Belarus at the UNHRC session on July 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
