June 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> CRRC Datong, a Chinese railway locomotive maker, has postponed the delivery of 15 electric freight locomotives to Belarus for fear of Western sanctions, said the unofficial Community of Railway Workers of Belarus (S\u010cB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing documents, S\u010cB reported that the Chinese company was supposed to deliver the locomotives at the end of 2023. However, the deadline has been moved to 2025-2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The locomotive reportedly contain Western-made parts that are prohibited for sale to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis equipment includes power transformers, traction electric motors and converters, as well as almost all control, diagnostic and monitoring systems,” S\u010cB said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that CRRC Datong buys these items in France, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce are considering ways to circumvent sanctions to honor commitments under the contract with the Belarusian Railways (B\u010c).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to S\u010cB, a Chinese creditor provided a loan to the Belarusians to finance the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, B\u010c’s upbeat statements on the maintenance of Belarusian-Chinese electric locomotives at the Baranavi\u010dy locomotive depot sound “extremely pathetic,” the community said..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added that even if the supplier circumvented sanctions, the final price of the locomotives would be significantly higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Much depends on the principled enforcement of sanctions regulations by European and American suppliers,” S\u010cB stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
