June 24, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> More than 48 percent of Belarusians travelling abroad this year chose Poland as their destination, says a survey by the National Statistics Committee (Bie\u0142stat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conducted in April at four border checkpoints handling all cross-border passenger traffic with the European Union, the survey is based on 1,727 questionnaires, of which 40 percent were filled out by people residing abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania ranked as the second most popular destination with almost 26 percent, followed by Italy (6 percent), Germany (3.8 percent) and Latvia (3 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian residents dominated inbound travel flows to Belarus with almost 25 percent, followed by Latvian and Polish residents, 21 and 13.6 percent, respectively. Russia (12.7 percent) and Ukraine (11.1) concluded the top five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Latvia closed the Silene border crossing at its shared border with Belarus indefinitely, citing concerns about illegal migration. The move left Paternieki as the only operating checkpoint between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania closed four border checkpoints, leaving only Medininkai and \u0160al\u010dininkai to handle cross-border traffic. Vilnius cited national security, smuggling and international sanctions as the reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2023, after Belarus had sentenced journalist and Polish minority activist Andrej Pa\u010dobut (Andrzej Poczobut) to eight years in prison, Poland closed a key crossing at the shared border, Bobrowniki, until further notice. Currently, passenger and cargo traffic is handled only by checkpoints in Terespol and Kukuryki, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland may close all border crossings with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration, Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski said last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
