June 25, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Political repression in Belarus continues and the country is in danger of losing its independence, so the regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka should be “deprived of resources,” opposition politician Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was speaking at a meeting between EU officials and Belarusian pro-democracy activists in Brussels today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Belarusian people should have agency. And it is in the interest of Belarusians, not the regime, that the border is opened for ordinary citizens and closed for goods,” \u0141atu\u0161ka said, according to his Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His statement came days after Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski said Warsaw was considering closing all border crossings in response to a surge in illegal migration from Africa and Asia through Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cutting off supplies will reduce the income that finances the “criminal activities of the regime” and significantly increase the pressure on the dictator, \u0141atu\u0161ka stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is important to expand the possibilities for Belarusians to obtain visas so that they have more opportunities to visit Europe, not the ‘Russian world.’ Supporting civil society is a major contribution to the critical voice of an independent, free and democratic Belarus. Part of society \u2013 the institutions of democratic forces \u2013 is an alternative to the regime and a unique phenomenon for Europe; they are needed today and for the future transit of power,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The advisory group discussed the political situation in Belarus, human rights, accountability of the regime, Minsk’s support for Russian aggression against Ukraine, political prisoners, legalization of exiled Belarusians, and other issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to \u0141atu\u0161ka, the meeting was attended by opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, and her allies Valeryj Kavale\u016dski, Alina Ko\u016d\u0161yk, and Valeryj Mackievi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU was represented by foreign policy, home affairs and neighborhood and enlargement officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
