June 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> EU neighbors foiled about 90 attempts by migrants to cross the border illegally from Belarus on June 24. That was a decrease of 32 percent from the previous day, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border agencies’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it was calm at the Latvian-Belarusian border, Lithuania stopped 10 attempts and Poland prevented about 80.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of June, the three countries have thwarted a total of 3,725* violations from Belarus (Poland, 3,327; Latvia, 367; Lithuania, 31). That was a decrease of 39.3 percent from the first 24 days of May and an increase of 30 percent from the 24 days of June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, the EU has stopped 22,538 illegal entry attempts from Belarus, an increase of 22.5 percent year on year. The number of attempts to violate the Polish border has soared by 52.7 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
