June 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union has not allowed at least 107 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day, as Poland stopped more than 100 illegal border crossings; Latvia, six and Lithuania, one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This June, migrants tried to cross illegally from Belarus into the EU at least 3,829 times, with 3,424 attempts via Poland alone. Illegal border crossings fell 40.6 percent from the May level yet grew 26 percent compared to last June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU thwarted at least 22,642 illegal border crossings on its shared border with Belarus, with 19,882 attempts via Poland alone, 2,511 via Latvia and 249 via Lithuania. Illegal border crossings picked up pace in February, reaching record highs in May, Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of daily stats showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Polish Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski said that Warsaw is considering closing all crossings with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration. Poland also enacted a 90-day border area entry ban on June 13 which reportedly helped reduce illegal border crossings by 30 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU. It escalated in November 2021, with hundreds of migrants storming the Polish border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West. In August 2023, the interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States warned that they would close the border with Belarus in response to a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
