June 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> In new instances of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on June 26 rights groups reported a prison sentence to Minsk teacher Darja Chmialnickaja. The 24-year-old was given five and a half years on charges of violent disorder and involvement in an armed conflict abroad, Dissidentby reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Mahilo\u016d judge sentenced Alena Dubro\u016dskaja to 18 months in prison for insulting the head of state in connection with critical social media posts, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both verdicts date back to April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Novika\u016d, 73, was released after serving two years in prison in a politically-motivated case, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. Authorities accused him of inciting hatred and sharing personal data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests and trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk police arrested an insurance company manager for participating in 2020 postelection protests and following opposition content, a pro-government source said. Viasna\u2019s activists also reported a brutal arrest in Minsk, yet details remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iryna Padleskaja and Maryja Daniluk were tried for sharing opposition content in Va\u016dkavysk, Hrodna region, the Pravo Imeyut <\/em>Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist” list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry announced an extremist group designation for \u017dyvie Bia\u0142aru\u015b!<\/em>, an opposition group on VKontakte with more than 8,500 followers. Law enforcers listed Juryj Ciarpi\u0142o\u016dski, former political prisoner U\u0142adzimir Kondru\u015b, Katarzyna Radzikulcava and Russian national Mikhail Laevski as extremist group members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities also branded several opposition social media pages as extremist content, including Ostanovite Lukashenko<\/em> and Pravovaya Iniciativa<\/em> on Odnoklassniki, ne_mauchy<\/em> on TikTok and 28 social media accounts by Mova Nanova<\/em>, a project popularizing Belarusian language, the information ministry’s website said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities put up for sale a land plot with a sauna owned by Viktar Babaryka, who was given a lengthy prison term after challenging Alaksandar Luka\u0161enka in the 2020 presidential election, according to e-auction.by<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alesia Bunievi\u010d left Belarus a few weeks after serving a three-and-a-half-year term in prison for an alleged attempt to cross the border illegally, the BySol Solidarity Foundation reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 27, human rights defenders identified at least 1,421 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
