June 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The investigator has ordered a mental health examination for opposition activist Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk, accused of disobeying prison authorities for the third time, the Brest branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous tests found her mentally fit, her husband Andrej \u0160arenda said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist is held incommunicado at the Homiel pre-trial detention center pending her fourth criminal trial. Her food parcel limit has been exhausted after an unknown person sent her 30 kilograms of spoiled carrots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman considers herself “a hostage, whose term behind bars can be prolonged indefinitely,” her husband noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0160arenda-Panasiuk reportedly has an “unhealthy” appearance and seeks help to secure her release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late March, a state-run TV channel reported that she appealed to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka for pardon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, the activist was given two years in prison after the judge found her guilty of violence against a police officer and insulting officials. She subsequently received two additional one-year terms for allegedly disobeying the prison administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 21, the day of her expected release, officials accused her of the same offence again as the charge is routinely used by authorities to keep opponents in prisons longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights organizations consider \u0160arenda-Panasiuk a political prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk has ignored an appeal from the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to take urgent measures to protect her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
