June 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Viasna Human Rights Center has reported that on April 8, the Viciebsk Regional Court sentenced a prominent workers’ rights activist to three years in prison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volha Brycikava, arrested last August and convicted of inciting hatred, had led the trade union at the Navapo\u0142ack-based Naftan oil refinery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, she had spent 105 days in captivity on administrative charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the government added 36 more people to the list of “persons involved in extremist activities,” the interior ministry reported. The new designations include journalist Ihar Karniej, whose imprisonment is widely recognized as politically-motivated, and Brycikava. The list contains 4,190 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-government media reported the arrest of an unnamed sole proprietor and IT professional Ja\u016dhien Uzacha\u016d in connection with the 2020 protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Homiel City Court announced its ruling in the trial of the Prochara\u016d family. Vasil Prochara\u016d was sentenced to 11 years in prison and his wife Larysa and son Pavie\u0142, to eight years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rus\u0142an Pracharenka, a Belarusian teacher tried in the same case, was given 10 years. The sentence against the fifth defendant, Fiodar Aksionienka, is unknown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charges ranged from failure to report a crime to high treason. The Prochara\u016ds lived in the village of Hrabo\u016dka near Ukraine. The closed-door trial has been held since May 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chocimsk District Court, Mahilo\u016d region, sentenced Andrej Karalo\u016d to two years in prison. He was found guilty of defaming the head of state in an online comment, Mayday.Team reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities labeled three social media pages as extremist. According to the information ministry, they are: zerkalo.io2 on TikTok, S\u0142ucki Styl on Instagram, and the Facebook page of Siarhiej Piatruchin, a journalist who left Belarus after serving out his prison sentence handed down on politically-motivated charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, authorities failed to sell office premises of imprisoned Viasna member Valancin Stefanovi\u010d, as no one wanted to buy it at an auction, according to Zerkalo<\/em>. The office room was put up for auction on April 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of June 28, human rights defenders identified at least 1,420 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
