July 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian officials see the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons as a deterrent, Pavie\u0142 Muraviejka, chief of the army General Staff, told ONT<\/em> in an interview broadcast on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have learned how to handle these weapons . . . and we will use them in case the sovereignty and independence of our country are threatened,” he said in an apparent reference to a recent tactical nuclear drill<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muraviejka expressed concern about NATO build-up near Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that 20,000 troops \u2013 ten NATO battalion tactical groups, six of which are from the United States \u2013 have been deployed at the Belarusian border. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Are we happy with such a neighborhood? It worries us, it stresses us out, it prompts us to consider and evaluate every action,” he said, noting that Belarus is monitoring the NATO troops and the national armed forces of its western neighbors. Minsk is ready to respond to any provocation, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, he said, Belarusian defense officials still maintain contacts with their Western counterparts despite the tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities in Minsk regularly accuse Western countries of aggressive intentions towards Belarus without presenting any evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka openly supports Russia’s war against Ukraine and regularly threatens to use Russian nuclear weapons in response to an attack on Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few weeks ago, he announced a drill involving the delivery of nuclear munitions to \u201cmissile and aviation military units, loading them onto launchers and attaching them to aircraft.\u201d Russia held a similar exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin and \u0141uka\u0161enka want to \u201cblackmail and intimidate Europe in an attempt to divide the West and weaken support for Ukraine,\u201d using the Belarusian people as a human shield, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja commented on the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts played down threats from Minsk and Moscow, noting that Russia is unlikely to use nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
