July 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian authorities are taking measures “to control the situation” at the shared border with Ukraine amid concerns about a military build-up, General Staff Chief Pavie\u0142 Muraviejka told ONT<\/em> in an interview broadcast on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted “ungrounded and incomprehensible” Ukrainian activities, including the deployment of special-purpose units of \u201cthe 1st<\/sup> presidential brigade\u201d to Ovruch, Zhytomyr region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The build-up is a “real challenge” because sabotage and reconnaissance groups can cross into Belarus, the general noted, identifying troop movements and airspace violations by spy drones as additional threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These factors have prompted Minsk to deploy additional forces, including artillery, to beef up security, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe would not like our southern neighbor to follow someone’s instructions and attempt to test the Belarusians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 20, the Belarusian military launched the surprise drill in response to reports about the military build-up at the border with Ukraine. Kyiv dismissed the accusations as an information campaign to escalate tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past week, Belarusian government agencies continued spreading information about Ukrainian military and intelligence activities near the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 28, Minsk ordered the deployment of a multiple-rocket launcher battalion to an unspecified location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, Vadzim \u0141uka\u0161evi\u010d, chief ideology officer with the Belarusian special operations forces, accused Ukraine of plotting terrorist attacks in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk made up the military build-up and provocations at its border with Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for Ukrainian border guards, told journalists earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine is ramping up fortifications at the border to defend itself, not to attack, he stressed, noting that the effort does not pose a threat to Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
