July 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland engineered the migration crisis at the Belarusian border to secure EU subsidies, General Staff Chief Pavie\u0142 Muraviejka told ONT<\/em> in an interview broadcast on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“All the accusations that the Polish leaders have been hurling against the Republic of Belarus are nothing but a mirror reflection of their own actions,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw engineered the migration crisis to regain access to the European Union funding that it lost a few years ago, he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland set up barriers on the shared border with Belarus, blocking delivery of goods to the EU, in particular Germany and France, seeks funding from the EU under the pretext of protecting the EU from Belarusian threats, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, illegal Belarusian-EU border crossings rose to at least 22,845 attempts with Poland being a primary target with more than 20,000 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the border escalated this spring with the spike in illegal border crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish border guards also recorded over 50 attacks by people trying to cross the border illegally. One of them resulted in the death of Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek, stabbed at the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-June, Warsaw enacted a 90-day border area entry ban and is considering closing all border crossings in response to the surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
