July 5, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarus\u2019 new foreign minister has lashed out at the UN secretary general over his concern about his country\u2019s human rights record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There’s no special case on Belarus in the UN to give [UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio] Guterres the right to say something today or [to present any] claims,” said Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres welcomed the release of several political prisoners in Belarus as a step to \u201cfull respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus\u201d in a UN statement on his meeting with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN press office reported<\/a> that Guterres discussed human rights with the Belarusian leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ry\u017eanko\u016d said, however, that the meeting in Kazakhstan\u2019s Astana focused on \u201ca wide range of issues\u201d rather than human rights, Belarusian state-run media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In reality, the meeting focused on the UN activities in the Republic of Belarus and the launch of a new cycle of cooperation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guterres, Ry\u017eanko\u016d said, described Belarus as a very reliable partner, praising its progress toward Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office has not yet commented on the meeting, which took place at the Belarusian ruler\u2019s initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
