July 5, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>International pressure on the Belarusian regime has to be constant to secure the release of all political prisoners, Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Bra\u017ee told Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja at their July 4 meeting in Riga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her statement follows reports on the release of at least 15 political prisoners in a campaign announced by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka three days ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bra\u017ee “reaffirmed Latvia\u2019s unwavering support for the Belarusian opposition\u2019s efforts towards a free and democratic Belarus in Europe,” the Latvian foreign ministry’s press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja praised Riga’s firm position vis-\u00e0-vis repression by the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime, its role in illegal migration and support for the Russian aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both politicians agreed on the need for the European Union to tighten sanctions against Belarus and synchronize measures against Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja is visiting Latvia on July 4 and 5. Today, she is expected to participate in the LAMPA Conversation Festival, where she will talk about national identity and political choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
