July 8, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian secret agents purchased two cars in Poland in the name of journalist Raman Pratasievi\u010d without his knowledge six months before his arrest in Minsk after the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in May 2021, Gazeta Wyborcza<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, Pratasievi\u010d lived in Lithuania and frequently travelled to Poland. Journalists suspect that the cars could have been used to stage a traffic accident and blame the journalist, who worked for Nexta, <\/em>a media outlet seen by Minsk as the driving force of the 2020 protests against election fraud in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan was aborted after his arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the cars was later transported to Lithuania, where an employee of the Belarusian embassy in Vilnius tried to sell it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian counterintelligence officers who posed as potential buyers examined the vehicle and informed their Polish counterparts about the journalist\u2019s name on the purchase contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish investigators identified a Ukrainian buyer of the cars. The man said an old friend who reportedly was linked to a former Belarusian diplomat had asked him buy cars for Belarusian construction workers in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pratasievi\u010d and Russian national Sofia Sapega were arrested in May 2021 after their flight from Greece to Lithuania was diverted to Minsk based on a false terrorist threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journalist was given eight years in prison in May 2023 but was pardoned later that month as part of a deal with investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sapega was sentenced to six years in prison in May 2022. She was pardoned and freed last June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pratasievi\u010d\u2019s former colleagues from Nexta<\/em>, Jan Rudzik and \u015aciapan Puci\u0142a, were given lengthy prison terms in absentia under special proceedings that target those living abroad and evading contact with investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early May, a Minsk judge reportedly ordered Pratasievi\u010d, Rudzik and Puci\u0142a to pay 23.8 million rubels ($7.4 million) in damages associated with Nexta <\/em>reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
