July 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lithuania’s State Security Department (VSD) focuses on protecting Lithuania from real threats despite criticism by some politicians, its head Darius Jauni\u0161kis has told 15min.lt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania, geographically close to Ukraine, where Russia is waging its war of aggression, faces increased activities by Russian and Belarusian secret services, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jauni\u0161kis accused Minsk of kidnapping a Lithuanian national without any reason, referring to Elena Ramanauskien\u0117, who was given a six-year prison term on espionage charges one month ago. Ramanauskien\u0117 holds both Lithuanian and Belarusian citizenship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He warned Lithuanians against traveling to Belarus “for cheaper goods or gasoline,” noting that kidnappings will continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official also announced “certain retaliatory measures on the part of the Lithuanian authorities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusians who moved to Lithuania have family members back home who may be intimidated and some can agree to cooperate with the Belarusian intelligence services, Jauni\u0161kis stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The VSD is monitoring activities of those Belarusians who work in Lithuania but travel to their home country, because Committee for State Security (KGB) agents may intimidate and recruit them, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
