July 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Latvia has not allowed at least 61 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day, while Poland reported more than 40 illegal border crossings, says Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian Border Guard Service recorded at least 15 attempts by third-country foreigners to cross illegally into the European Union via Belarus after a two-week break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU did not allow at least 703 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus in the first 10 days of July, with the number of attempts falling almost three-fold compared to the same period in June. Latvia with 370 attempts replaced Poland as the primary target of illegal migration via Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2024, the EU has thwarted at least 23,752 attempts to violate its border from Belarus, 15 percent more than in the same period last year. Poland recorded 20,549 attempts, while Latvia and Lithuania reported 2,935 and 268 attempts, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the border escalated this spring with the spike in illegal border crossings and attacks on Polish border guards by people trying to cross the border illegally. One of them resulted in the death of Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek, stabbed at the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
