July 17, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on July 16 as authorities continued punishing people who protested against the rigged 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IT worker Lizavieta Makrydzina who returned to Belarus from Poland faces criminal charges for participating in postelection protests, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk police arrested a software engineer for participating in 2020 protests, following opposition content and donating $15 to the BySol solidarity fund, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. The man was reportedly forced to \u201ccompensate for the damage\u201d by transferring an unspecified amount to a healthcare facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja\u016dhienija Ramanava from Dobru\u0161, Homiel region, was given 18 months in prison for participating in protests, Viasna\u2019s Homiel branch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna also reported the arrest of a Minsk accountant for following opposition content, posting government-critical comments, and sharing information with a project that disclosed the personal data of officials responsible for politically-motivated reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanis\u0142a\u016d \u0141uhavy and Kanstancin Pian\u010duk went on trial in Brest on charges of abusing the state symbols and theft using modified computer data, the Brest branch of Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine-related cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prosecutor General\u2019s Office reported extremist content designation for the Ukrainian Telegram channels STERNENKO<\/em>, PETLYARIS<\/em>, + Vertical<\/em> and Skrynka Pandory<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a woman in Viciebsk over an anti-war tattoo on her arm following a tip-off from people attending the music festival in the city, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in \u015aviet\u0142ahorsk, Homiel region, has ruled in the case against D\u017amitryj Su\u016dchana\u016d, whose brother Marat died in Ukraine last year fighting on the Russian side, the Homiel branch of Viasna said. Authorities accused the man of defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. The verdict remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 17, human rights defenders identified at least 1,388 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
