July 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated <\/a>persecution were documented in Belarus on July 17, with five people scheduled to go on trial in Minsk on terrorism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities claim that Valeryj Vodzin, Andrej Hryhorje\u016d, Victoryja Vo\u0142\u010dak, Hanna Sava\u010dkina and her mother Ta\u0107ciana Rusak “prepared a terrorist act on Victory Day on Kyiv’s instructions.” They face six criminal charges, including high treason and terrorism, according to the Viasna Human Rights Center. The trial will open at the Minsk City Court on July 26 behind closed doors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Minsk police arrested a sales manager for participating in 2020 postelection protests, while opposition activist Andrej Zuje\u016d went on trial in Viciebsk on four criminal charges, Mediazona<\/em> and Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 26, a judge in Babrujsk, Mahilo\u016d region, ruled to transfer jailed surgeon Andrej Lubiecki from the penal colony to a closed prison until the end of his five-year term. Two years ago, authorities blacklisted him as an extremist and a terrorist, yet rights groups consider his persecution to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja\u016dhien K\u0142ada\u016d from Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, faces new criminal charges after serving one year in prison for giving a like to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s caricatures on social media, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. Authorities accuse him of inciting hatred, rioting and calling for sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 18, <\/a>human rights defenders identified at least 1,388 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
