July 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Lithuanian ban on entry of Belarus-registered cars has come into force with at least 26 cars turned away at border crossings as of 7:00 am this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sixteen were stopped at the \u0160al\u010dininkai-Beniakoni border crossing, LRT.lt<\/em> reported, citing Darius \u017dvironas of the Lithuanian Customs Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten cars were turned away at the Medininkai-Kamienny \u0141oh checkpoint, including a car with a Lithuanian driver, according to its head Ar\u016bnas Daubaras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only persons with a valid Lithuanian visa or residence permit driving their own cars are allowed to enter the country until August 16, Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Simonas \u0160at\u016bnas stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania announced the ban on entry of all Belarus-registered passenger cars regardless of the nationality of their owner or driver on July 17, a day before it entered into force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius cited the European Union Council regulation 2024\/1865 of June 29, noting that the move was coordinated with Latvia and Estonia that used the same regulation to ban entry of vehicles with Belarusian license plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja described the ban as \u201ca hurried and harmful\u201d decision, affecting ordinary Belarusians rather than Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
