July 18, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Mahilo\u016d region’s prosecutor ruled to restrict access in Belarus to apbel.com<\/em>, representing an initiative by former Belarusian political prisoners, the prosecutor’s press office reports, citing violations of the media law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecutor claimed that the website posted extremism-related content “aimed at discrediting the authorities\u201d and collected donations from abroad to help \u201cpersons who committed offenses and crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded earlier this year by exiled former Belarusian political prisoners, the apbel.com <\/em>initiative seeks to support victims of politically-motivated <\/em>reprisals and their families both in Belarus and abroad. Its volunteers are based in Belarus, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Lithuania and Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 18, human rights defenders identified at least 1,388 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
