July 19, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus’ neighbors stopped at least 121 illegal attempts to enter the European Union (EU) from its territory on July 18, 83 attempts more than a day earlier, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of data from border agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service did not register any attempts yesterday. This year’s daily record of 24 attempts was registered at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border on March 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia’s State Border Guard prevented 81 attempts, the daily record for the Baltic state in 2024. It registered the previous record of 76 attempts on May 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard foiled “more than 40” attempts. The daily record of 457 attempts was reported on April 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of July, the neighboring EU countries have stopped at least 1,365 attempts by migrants to sneak in from Belarus (Poland, at least 697; Latvia, 628; Lithuania, 40). It was a 56.9 percent decrease over the first 18 days of June 2024 and a 46.7 percent decrease over the same period in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, the three countries have prevented at least 24,414 illegal entries from Belarus (Poland, at least 20,928; Latvia, 3,193; Lithuania, 293), up 12.1 percent from the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the border escalated this spring with the spike in illegal border crossings and attacks on Polish border guards by people trying to cross the border illegally. One of them resulted in the death of Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek, stabbed at the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
