July 19, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The German foreign ministry is aware that Belarus has sentenced German national Rico Krieger to death, the ministry’s press office told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federal Foreign Office and the embassy in Minsk are providing Krieger with consular assistance and actively defending his interests before the Belarusian authorities, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry denounced the death penalty as a cruel, inhumane and unacceptable form of punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany advocates for its abolition across the world, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that the details of consular cases cannot be disclosed for safety reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viasna Human Rights Center has confirmed that the Minsk Regional Court sentenced the 30-year-old German national to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, media reported that the sentence was issued on June 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators accused Krieger of spying, terrorism, mercenarism and other serious crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
