July 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> On June 24, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced German national Rico Krieger to death, the Telegram channel MotolkoPomogi<\/em> and the Viasna Human Rights Center reported yesterday. He was found guilty of illegal handling of firearms, ammunition, or explosives; deliberate disabling of a vehicle or lines of communication; creation of or participation in an extremist formation; an act of terrorism; covert operations; and mercenarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna Homiel reported that the \u0141oje\u016d District Court in the Homiel Region sentenced Re\u010dyca activist Juryj \u0160\u010du\u010dko to five years in a medium-security penal colony without the defendant being present. He was found guilty of insulting an official; insulting a judge; false reporting; insulting the head of state; unlawful acts relating to information on private life and personal data; and violence or threats against an official. The judge also fined him 6,000 rubels ($1,800). \u0160\u010du\u010dko is not in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 18, the Ma\u0142adzie\u010dna District Court in the Minsk region sentenced jailed activist Andrej Kudzik to four years in a medium-security penal colony for discrediting Belarus and fined him 16,000 rubels. At the beginning of 2022, the man was tried for participating in protests. He served his sentence and was released in July 2023, only to be arrested again six months later, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trial of Alina Chmiale\u016dskaja opened at the Minsk City Court yesterday. According to Viasna, she was charged with participation in an armed formation, armed conflict or military action in the territory of a foreign state\/recruitment or preparation of persons for such participation; and financing of extremist activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 19, courts in the Hrodna Region tried several people on charges of sharing extremist content, a minor offense punishable under the Administrative Offenses Code. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kareli\u010dy District Court heard a case against Ludmi\u0142a Samaj\u0142ovi\u010d; the Navahrudak District Court, against A\u0142a \u0141o\u017ea\u010dnik; the Va\u016dkavysk District Court, against Anatol Ty\u0161ko\u016dski and Ihar Smok; the Lida District Court, against Pavie\u0142 Stankievi\u010d and Pavie\u0142 Orsik; Hrodna’s Lenininski District Court, against Alaksiej Sierabrako\u016d, Ars\u0142an Radlinski and Siarhiej Rusi\u0142ka. The results are unknown, the Pravo Imeyut initiative reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ta\u0107ciana Franckievi\u010d was arrested at Va\u016dkavysk’s Penal Colony No. 11 in the Hrodna region when she delivered a parcel for her imprisoned son, activist Alaksandar Franckievi\u010d. Together with the woman, authorities arrested her sister Natalla \u0141abacevi\u010d. The reasons are unknown, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owner of the Tutaka diner was arrested in Lida, Hrodna region, for his social media posts. Police-linked Telegram channels threatened him with a “serious punishment” for “spreading extremism online.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Hrodna resident who had worked as a solar panel installer in the Netherlands was arrested upon return to Belarus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A police-linked Telegram channel released a video of the man saying that he signed up for the opposition’s Victory Plan (Pieramoha), posted negative comments about police and “threatened them and their families with physical violence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities declared Mediki Grodno<\/em>, a private Telegram channel whose name translates as “doctors of Hrodna,” an extremist group at the request of the Committee for State Security (KGB). The agency said that the group involved Viktar \u0160umiel and Danuta Kavalenka, according to the interior ministry’s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The social media of Alaksandra Hierasimienia, a former head of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation, the YouTube channel of Marharyta La\u016d\u010duk, an opera singer and regime critic, the Association of Political Prisoners of Belarus and about a dozen other pages were designated as extremist content, the information ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 20, human rights defenders identified at least 1,378 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
