July 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka on the anniversary of his first inauguration as president of Belarus in 1994, wishing him “constructive, friendly dialogue and close cooperation for the benefit of the brotherly peoples of Belarus and Russia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus’ recent history was marked by the construction of modern state institutions and significant social and economic progress and is inseparable from its leader, the Kremlin’s message said, according to \u0141uka\u0161enka’s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin claimed that \u0141uka\u0161enka won six elections, which, he said, testified to his enormous popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also praised \u0141uka\u0161enka’s contribution to the friendship and cooperation between Russia and Belarus, “to the formation and consolidation of the Union State and the advancement of mutually beneficial integration processes in the Eurasian space.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty years ago, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka won Belarus’ first presidential election. He soon disbanded the parliament and several of his opponents disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1999 and 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has not held a single free and fair election since 1996, according to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The government is expected to stage a new election within the next 12 months with \u0141uka\u0161enka planning to run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian pro-democracy forces have announced efforts toward international non-recognition of the election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
