July 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service stopped a record number of illegal entries per day from Belarus in eight months, 40, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of the service’s stats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanians foiled 41 such attempts on November 9. Since then, their number has always been smaller. Notably, Vilnius did not report any attempts on July 18 and 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Latvia prevented 30 border violations from Belarus. Polish services had stopped 11 illegal entries from Belarus on July 19. Warsaw has not published stats for July 20 so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July, migrants became more active in the Latvian and Lithuanian sectors and less active at the Polish border. Over the past 20 days, Latvian services prevented 705 border violations in the area (427 in June and 543 in May). Lithuanian services prevented 80 (36 in June and 34 in May).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the overall migratory pressure on the European Union (EU) border from Belarus has recently decreased. Belarus’ EU members stopped a combined total of 7,694 attempts in May, 4,236 in June, and 1,489 in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU has reported 24,538 cases since the beginning of the year, including 20,935 in Poland, 3,270 in Latvia, and 333 in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarus-EU border started in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent migrants from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government announced the suspension of a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the border escalated this spring with the spike in illegal border crossings and attacks on Polish border guards by people trying to cross the border illegally. One of them resulted in the death of Polish soldier Mateusz Sitek, stabbed at the border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
