July 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus’ Prime Minister Raman Ha\u0142o\u016d\u010danka’s visits to Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua last week may have been a “part of Russian schemes that use Belarus to help Russia evade Western sanctions,” says a recent analysis<\/a> by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk may be helping Moscow import unspecified goods from Latin America that Russia cannot acquire due to Western sanctions, the analysts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conclusion is linked to Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin visits to Nicaragua and Cuba immediately after Ha\u0142o\u016d\u010danka, who reportedly agreed on Cuban exports to Belarus in exchange for supplies of unspecified goods worth “millions of dollars.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ha\u0142o\u016d\u010danka also signed contracts worth $85 million during his Nicaragua visit “aimed at bilateral economic cooperation, including the Belarusian Development Bank’s agreement to finance the delivery of more than 700 pieces of unspecified equipment to Nicaragua,” the ISW noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western countries started introducing sanctions against Belarus in 2020, two years before Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, punishing the rigged presidential election and human rights abuses in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, sanctions against Minsk are not as tight as those against Moscow, allowing Belarus to be a conduit for sanctioned goods to Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
