July 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Aleksey Zhuravlev, a prominent Russian MP, has praised the Belarusian government for not introducing a moratorium on capital punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with the Minsk-Moskva | Pryamoy Efir YouTube channel, he commented on the death sentence Belarus imposed on Rico Krieger, a German national.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A court there sentenced some 30-year-old Fritz to death by gunshot,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unfortunately, we don’t do that. But we should.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Zhuravlev, the sentence gave many in the West jitters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a very good decision, because it sent a signal that this is how they will be treated, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MP suggested that Russia and Belarus form a prisoner exchange pool to swap imprisoned Europeans for Russians jailed in the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 19, the Viasna Human Rights Center confirmed that the Minsk Regional Court had sentenced the 30-year-old German national to death on June 24. The death sentence was first reported by the Telegram channel MotolkoPomogi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krieger was charged with illegal handling of firearms, ammunition or explosives; deliberate disabling of a vehicle or lines of communication; creation of or participation in an extremist formation; an act of terrorism; covert operations; and mercenarism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German foreign ministry is aware of the sentence, the ministry\u2019s press office told\u00a0Pozirk\u00a0on July 19. The Federal Foreign Office and the embassy in Minsk are providing Krieger with consular assistance and actively defending his interests before the Belarusian authorities, it said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry denounced the death penalty as a cruel, inhumane and unacceptable form of punishment. Germany advocates for its abolition around the world, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
