July 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Former Polish Judge Tomasz Szmydt, who defected to Belarus in early May, could have shared a database of Polish judges, prosecutors, court officials and others with the Belarusian security services, Rzeczpospolita<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Szmydt was in charge of the legal department at the Polish National Council of the Judiciary, which sought control over personal data in courts, the newspaper noted, citing Judge Arkadiusz Cichocki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Szmydt reportedly approved a proposal to allow courts access to personal data on everyone who filed any court cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a judge, he dealt with a data leak case involving more than 50,000 employees of the Polish National School of Judiciary and Public Prosecution, Cichocki said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Szmydt had planned his defection in advance, the data would be extremely valuable to any foreign country, the official noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Szmydt claimed that he was forced to leave Poland because of disagreement with the government\u2019s policy. He also said that he \u201cwas persecuted and threatened for his independent political position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, he and his wife were reportedly involved in a smear campaign targeting judges who opposed judicial reforms by the Law and Justice (PiS) government that was in power in Poland at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Belarusian secret services recruited Szmydt a long time ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
