July 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The declaration of Belarusian sovereignty on July 27, 1990 was the key event in modern Belarusian history, confirming Belarusians’ aspirations to freedom and independence, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe path to the dream was long and full of trials,\u201d she said in her Telegram channel, noting prominent figures of Belarusian history, such as Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski, participants in the Slu\u010dk uprising in the 1920 and those who stood up for the Belarusian identity during reprisals in the 1930s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independence is about freedom of thought, expression and self-expression, the desire to live in harmony and respect for each other’s dignity and rights, the politician noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrue independence starts with each of us as we accept responsibility for our destiny, choose to be open and fair,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1991 to1996, Belarus celebrated Independence Day on July 27. After the 1996 referendum initiated by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, it was brought forward to July 3 to commemorate the liberation of Minsk from the Nazis in 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
