August 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Ihar Sierhijenka, speaker of the Belarusian National Assembly’s lower chamber, met with Masoud Pezeshkian, sworn in as Iran’s ninth president two days ago, in Tehran on July 31 to discuss Western sanctions, the House of Representatives\u2019 press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After attending Pezeshkian\u2019s inauguration, Sierhijenka met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Bagher Ghalib and Mohammad Reza Majidi, secretary general of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sierhijenka’s visit to Iran coincided with a visit by an Iranian defense delegation to Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian defense ministry’s delegation arrived in Minsk to discuss bilateral engineering projects, the Belarusian defense ministry’s press office reported yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavie\u0142 Michaj\u0142a\u016d, head of the Engineering Troops Department at the Belarusian General Staff, led the Belarusian delegation at the talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian delegation was led by Javad Gazanfania, chief of the Main Directorate of Construction Projects at the Office of the Deputy Defense Minister for Engineering and Technical Issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has intensified its relations with Iran after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka visited Tehran in March 2023 to negotiate a road map for comprehensive cooperation in 2023-2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year ago, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Reza Ashtiani signed a memorandum on military cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Seyed Ghalandari visited Minsk in February and Mehdi Jafar, a deputy defense minister and rector of the Malek Ashtar University of Technology, visited the Belarusian capital in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chrenin met with his Iranian counterpart the same month on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization defense ministers\u2019 meeting and reaffirmed Belarus\u2019 readiness to boost ties with Tehran amid international sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, a Belarusian military delegation participated in a counterterrorism drill in Iran as part of the exercise Security Belt 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk also accredited Iran\u2019s military attach\u00e9 to Russia, Reza Khosravi Moghaddam, the first Iranian military diplomat to accredited in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
