August 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The BY_Help initiative will be one of the eight organizations providing assistance via the international humanitarian fund set up to support political prisoners in Belarus, its founder Alaksiej Lavon\u010dyk has said in Vilnius at the New Belarus conference’s side event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overseen by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, the fund is expected to start operations from mid-August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja came up with the fund\u2019s idea after jailed Belarusian human rights champion Ale\u015b Bialacki was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. She announced the launch of the fund in late April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By_Help will keep assisting those who left Belarus and will continue operating inside the country, Lavon\u010dyk stressed, noting the priority of helping recently released political prisoners. People who spent a lot of time in Belarusian prisons suffer from multiple health problems, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental health issues are also abundant, the activist added, noting that former inmates are often as traumatized as soldiers returning from combat action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
