August 5, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The opposition transition cabinet is considering the possibility of uniting activities of initiatives representing the interests of Belarusians abroad, U\u0142adzimir Astapienka, the opposition foreign affairs chief, has said today at a side event of the New Belarus conference in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new system could unite efforts by the so-called people’s embassies, a grassroots initiative by exiled Belarusians who refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the current Belarusian authorities, and representations of the Belarusian pro-democracy forces, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, people’s embassies operate in 23 countries. In late February, the Committee for State Security (KGB) blacklisted the initiative as an \u201cextremist\u201d group. A few weeks later, Belarusian investigators filed criminal charges against more than 100 activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-democracy forces run offices in Brussels, Kyiv, and Prague as well as a joint representation for Estonia and Latvia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius officially recognizes the office of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja as a representation office of the Belarusian opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
