August 6, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners remain behind bars “due to the cooperation between the two dictatorships of Russia and Belarus,” Russia’s Memorial Human Rights Center has said in a statement on the occasion of the recent US-Russia prisoner swap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When news of Belarus’s participation in the exchange emerged, we hoped that our friend and colleague Ale\u015b Bialacki, the chairperson of the Human Rights Center Viasna, and democratic movement leader Maryja Kale\u015bnikava would be among those freed but this did not happen,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memorial expressed solidarity with Belarusian political prisoners, their families and those who support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major prisoner exchange between the Western countries and Russia took place on August 1. Rico Krieger, a German national sentenced to death in Belarus and pardoned by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka last month, was freed but not a single Belarusian political prisoner was included in the swap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja reportedly was not involved in the prisoner exchange talks, which took place without Minsk\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
