August 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> At least 1,742 NGOs, including associations, trade unions and foundations, were dissolved between the 2020 presidential election and the end of July 2024, Lawtrend said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure was 1,509 at the end of December 2023 and 1,173 at the end of December 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of July, at least 1,086 NGOs were ordered to shut down and 656 filed for dissolution on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, most of the latter decided to disband because of pressure on their members, the unfavorable legal environment and political reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawtrend reports that authorities tend to target national associations that have failed to comply with new legal requirements, such as the requirement to have branches in all regions and Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In this regard, the campaign to liquidate public associations may be quite intensive in the coming months,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human rights group also pointed out the introduction of a new licensed activity, such as inpatient social services. As a result, NGOs providing inpatient care will need a license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 40 activities require a license, and many require all sorts of permits. The number of regulated activities is growing and expanding into new areas, including those common to NGOs, Lawtrend said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
