August 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A district court in Brest has sentenced eight locals to prison on charges of violent disorder, the Supreme Court reported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were targeted in a “round dance case.” According to investigators, the suspects “shouted slogans and displayed white-red-white flags” in the center of Brest on August 10-11, 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court sentenced Anatol Zakurka, Vasil Niparka and Ihar Sarokin to 18 months in a minimum-security penal colony; Alaksiej Samajluk and Siarhiej Dziemidziuk, to two years; Ivan Amrej\u010dyk, to two years and three months; Mikita Jachimovi\u010d, to two and a half years; Valancina \u017duko\u016dskaja, to 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Mazyr District Court began the trial of Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Malaj\u010duk, designated by human rights groups as a political prisoner. This is his third trial on charges of malicious disobedience to prison authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaj\u010duk is serving a 22-year sentence for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks on Freedom Day, March 25, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viciebsk Regional Court opened the trial of biker Siarhiej Navuma\u016d. He is accused of inciting hatred and insulting the head of state, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities arrested five residents in Kobryn, a woman and four men, in connection with 2020 protests. One men allegedly moderated the Kobryn 97 Percent chat, Mediazona<\/em> and a pro-government source reported. It is unclear what charges they face, if any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A young woman was arrested in Brest for protesting, Mediazona<\/em> and a pro-government source reported. Police released a video of her saying that she is raising a six-month-old child. A criminal case has been opened on unknown charges. Law enforcers reportedly identified the woman in a video filmed by other detainees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Lida resident was arrested for subscribing to “extremist media.” The man, whose online nickname is Don-Vladimir Corleone, reportedly worked abroad for a long time. He was arrested upon return to Belarus, Mediazona<\/em> and a pro-government source reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court ruled to dissolve the Minsk Cycling Society, Pozirk<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human rights groups declared 10 people political prisoners: Ivan Amrej\u010dyk, Vasil Niparka, Alaksiej Samajluk, Anatol Zakurka, Ihar Sarokin and Siarhiej Dziemidziuk (see above), as well as Alaksandar Parchomienka, Ihar Tarasa\u016d, Andrej Vialikasielec and Stanis\u0142a\u016d \u010cmycha\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mother of anti-fascist activists Cimur and Tamaz Pipija died, the Belarusian Anarchist Black Cross reported. The brothers were arrested in 2020. The former was sentenced to six years behind bars and the latter to five. Human rights groups declared them political prisoners. The mother was diagnosed with cancer six months after the sons’ arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of August 7, human rights defenders identified at least 1,394 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
