August 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian activists staged a rally in downtown Warsaw yesterday to express concern about the planned reorganization of Belsat<\/em>, a Belarusian-language satellite television station affiliated with Poland\u2019s TVP<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the speakers, TVP<\/em> World Director Micha\u0142 Broniatowski, reassured the rally participants that the reform will not be as devastating as feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belsat <\/em>will share a frequency with the Ukrainian and Russian services, and its airtime will be reduced from 12 to eight hours a day, Broniatowski told Pozirk, <\/em>noting that TVP<\/em> plans to merge all language services into one department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broniatowski, who is expected to head the World Programs Center (O\u015brodek program\u00f3w dla Zagranicy), spoke with Pozirk<\/em> after the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He denied claims by speakers that Belarusian airtime might be slashed by more than 60 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zianon Pa\u017aniak, a conservative opposition leader, said he feared that the reorganization will eliminate Belarusian independent television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He initiated an appeal to the Polish government demanding that TVP<\/em> keep Belsat<\/em> as an independent unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is absolutely unfair to say that Belsat<\/em> will not be independent,\u201d Broniatowski argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelsat<\/em>‘s entire editorial staff will be Belarusian. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not tell them what topics to cover or not to cover, at least, as long as I am in charge.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broniatowski told the rally that Belsat<\/em>‘s current staff will retain their jobs after the reorganization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking part in the rally were Alina Ko\u016d\u0161yk, the United Transitional Cabinet’s culture chief; Belsat<\/em>‘s former Director Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy; and Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Si\u016d\u010dyk of the Razam solidarity movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports of Belsat<\/em>‘s imminent merger with the World Programs Center have been circulating since July 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will be put under one umbrella with the Russian channel Vot Tak<\/em> and the Ukrainian service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TVP<\/em> World<\/em> is expected to launch the center on March 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I would like to stress that Belsat <\/em>is not disappearing, it is gaining new opportunities,” Broniatowski said earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Each television channel in the group will operate with its logo, budget and autonomy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
